We believe sustainability should be impactful, scalable, and woven into everyday life — not just symbolic. That’s why our R&D goes far beyond decorative or niche products like soap or candles, which, while creative, have limited reach and consumption. Instead, we focus our innovation efforts on developing highly consumable, widely used products made from upcycled spent coffee grounds (SCG), so we can make a real difference where it counts.
Globally, millions of tons of SCG are thrown away every year — and simply diverting a tiny fraction of that waste into small decorative goods won’t meaningfully reduce landfill impact or promote a circular economy. Our mission is to create practical, high-volume products that touch people’s daily lives and maximize the use of this underutilized resource.
One example of this approach is our coffee ground-based pencil — a humble yet powerful concept. Pencils are produced and consumed by the billions annually, in homes, schools, and offices worldwide. By replacing traditional materials with SCG in such a universally used item, we can upcycle waste at scale, displace virgin resources, and spark awareness of sustainable alternatives — all while offering a product that performs as well as its conventional counterpart.
Our ongoing R&D explores other similar opportunities: products that are both consumable and sustainable, designed to deliver meaningful environmental benefits without requiring consumers to change their habits. Whether it’s stationery, packaging, compostable cutlery, or other mass-market essentials, our goal is to ensure that every item made from SCG contributes to reducing waste and promoting a greener planet.
At Coffee Meets Charcoal, we don’t just innovate for the sake of novelty — we innovate for impact. By focusing on products people use every day, we ensure that our upcycling efforts scale, inspire, and make sustainability accessible to everyone.
